Mobility is range of motion created by the ability to find stability in the movements. When one part of the body is stable, the other parts are able to find their freedom to express their full range of mobility.
How do you create stability to find mobility? As we work through movements in a set order to create a flow, I pin-point the muscles that need to become still and strong so that the surrounding muscles can find movement - an example of this would be in the shoulder. You don't need to pull your hips into movement to find mobility in your shoulder joint. Therefore, when working through the shoulders, we might find various stances that put the hips and lower body into a loaded position (IE: Lunge, Squat, Triangle pose, etc) while we isolate specified movements in your shoulders.
What does a typical Mobility Session with you look like? Based on the workout of the day/week, I take the main muscle areas that were required for that workout and I plan a mobility session around that. Here's an example: A local Crossfit gym has done a workout with deadlifts as their warm up, followed by an AMRAP of 5 pull-ups, 5 SDHP, and 5 Toe ups. Looking at this workout, I would offer mobility for the shoulders and upper back to help re-lay the fascial connections within the muscles they used which would in turn give the athletes better range of motion, and then I would end with some held twists and stretches that would release the lower back and hips.
How often should I offer mobility at my gym/studio/crossfit? That depends on you. I would suggest AT LEAST once a week, whether that's through a mobility class with myself each week or through some other offering.
Will you come teach at my gym/studio/crossfit? As long as we can find a time that fits into both our schedules, heck yes!
Want A Mobile Yogi to offer mobility classes at your gym?
"Michelle gave me my first real exposure to [mobility]. How much I really wanted to run away but it turned out to be a fun experience. Your classes, for myself, are always physically challenging and you present them in a way that is positive and relaxing at the same time. I always feel I leave your classes learning something to help with long term management of aches and pains associated with Crossfit demands on my 46 year old body. I enjoy your classes and it has helped me associate the benefits that [mobility] offers. Thank you, Michelle." - James C.
"Michelle is an expert in fascia release!! Not only did I leave feeling like I had a 90 minute deep tissue massage, I learned so much about fascia I had never known before. Her humor, warm spirit and positive energy kept us smiling/giggling even during the deepest pressure points. This [myofascial] workshop is a MUST for yogis, athletes, body builders, or anyone looking to learn more about those mysterious inner workings between our skin and muscles". - Riley P.
